Spring is officially here and if this past week in San Diego has been any indication of what the upcoming months will be bringing we are most certainly in for a doozy of a summer! Temperatures well over 80 degrees hovered throughout the week and it reminded me of my favorite part of Summer: white and rosé wines! Well, this week’s Wine of the Week is just that – one of my all-time favorite varietals – Albariño. This varietal has almost become chic but it holds lasting memories for me of my first trip to Galicia in the northwestern region of Spain.

The 2008 Pazo de Galegos is a truly distinctive and expressive 100% Albariño coming from low-yielding vines. Through the use of partial malolactic fermentation this wine exhibits greater freshness and aromatic expression. This straw-colored wine boasts aromas of green apple, light citrus, and floral undertones. On the palate this wine is the epitome of freshness with a lightly tart expression of that same green apple and citrus. The somewhat higher acidity is cause for celebration as this wine will pair wonderfully with any number of spicy or richer foods. The wine received 90 points from Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar and retails for around $20.

Life is short. Drink Spanish wine!
