This weeks Wine of the Week is a great find from the region of Calatayud – a 2007 Las Rocas Viñas Viejas de San Alejandro. The D.O. Calatayud was founded in 1989 and is located in the province of Zaragoza. Vine cultivation in the region dates back to 200 BCE. The predominant grape in the region is Garnacha Tinta (accounting for more than half of the vineyards) and thrives in the continental climate of the region (cold winters and hot summers as well as extreme variations between night and day during the ripening period). The yields are low which help to produce a higher quality crop. More than half of the vineyards are over 50 years old, and the wines from Calatayud are the result of an excellent microclimate, wide range of soils, and the primary varietal (Garnacha Tinta), which is perfectly adapted to its surroundings. Incidentally, the region exports an astounding 85% of its production.

Bodegas San Alejandro is a cooperative founded in 1962 and comprised of approximately 350 individuals. It is located in the village of Miedes which boasts a population of a mere 530. A number of wines are produced here with the Las Rocas wines (there are two) its most popular. I opted for the Viñas Viejas (Old Vines) because the vines for this wine range from 60-80 years. This 100% Garnacha is fermented in stainless steel tanks for roughly 20-25 days and then aged in a combination of American (60%) and French (40%) oak for ten months.

A huge fan of Garnacha, this wine did not disappoint. The 2007 Las Rocas Viñas Viejas exhibits a gorgeous deep purple color and well as aromas of forest fruit, wet leather, spice bouquet, and truffles. On the palate flavors of spice, pepper, and ripe fruits give way to light minerality. This wine is nicely complex with a rich and lengthy finish. I drank this wine with a homemade black bean and beef chili. The spiciness of the chili paired nicely with the flavors of the wine and both complemented each other quite well. I highly recommend this wine (and my chili, too!).

Life is short. Drink Spanish wine!

Love this wine! Had it for the first time in Silver Spring, MD at a great spot called Adega. Everytime I see it I make sure to pick up a bottle! Great value and great taste!
