“For the first Ribera of Christmas my wine guy gave to me… a 2007 Emilio Moro.” I figured for our first wine of the holiday season we would start with a dead ringer. The Emilio Moro winery (located in Ribera del Duero) is family-run and has been making wine for more than 120 years. The 144 acres owned by the family overlook the Duero River from an elevation of 700 meters (2300 feet). It is here that the purest clone of Tempranillo exists and has been used to graft all other vines on the property. In 1932 (the year Emilio Moro was born) the winery planted its first vineyard, Finca Resalso. Fifty-five years later (in 1987) the wines of Bodegas Emilio Moro were first sold. In 1989 the first vintage of the Emilio Moro namesake brand was sold. This wine is the winery’s largest production and most representative wine. The years that followed (1998, 2000, and 2002) all saw the introduction of Emilio Moro’s higher end wines.

Garnering a slew of 90 and 90-plus ratings, the 2007 Emilio Moro is produced from vines ranging from 15 to 25 years and was aged for 12 months in 50/50 French and American oak. Beautifully dense and ruby-colored in the glass, this wine exudes aromas of black cherry, blackberry, cedar wood, and spice. On the palate the Emilio Moro is spicy with dark fruit flavors and fine tannins carry to a long and luscious finish. This wine is ready to drink now but could age for another 3-5 years as well. The 2007 Emilio Moro retails for roughly $20-$25. ¡Saludos!

Life is short. Drink Spanish wine!
